The Christian Case for Individual Rights

Individual rights are not only a functional necessity for any free, flourishing society; they are a biblical mandate.

The notion of individual rights – that is, the concept that a person is entitled to certain liberties simply by merit of the fact that they are, as it were, a person – is a quintessential dogma of western civilization. Indeed, the argument could be made that it is the quintessential dogma of western civilization. As the Declaration of Independence boldly declares, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

It is no surprise, then, that it is often the subject of attack by the postmodernists. If you can crack the foundation, the house is sure to fall. It may be a slow fall, but it’s a guaranteed one.

Heresies & Witch Hunts

An old friend (let's call her Jane) recently reached out to me with some questions about a movement known as the New Apostolic Reformation. Here's the situation:

Jane has two friends that recently went to a church that identifies as part of the NAR. They attended a night service in which a man designated as an apostle was conducting fire tunnels, teaching people how to tap into new spiritual gift like healing and prophesy, and so on. One was pretty freaked out and the other thought it was relatively normal.

So, what gives? Is this heresy? Satan in disguise? A day in the life of a Pentecostal? Too much Red Bull? Just enough Red Bull?

An Ode to Chronological Snobbery

"Mixed messages, repetition, bad fact-checking, awkward constructions, inconsistent voice, [and] weak character development" are just a few of the problems with Scripture.

Well, according to Salon, which brings other totally credible articles that clearly have no bias, such as "Let's hope the Boston Marathon bomber is a white American" and "I'm a pedophile, but not a monster".

What is God's Preferred Pronoun?

A few days ago, part of the Episcopal Church (specifically the Diocese of Washington D.C.) decided that God is no longer male.

I think the conversation went something like this:

Church: God, what is your preferred pronoun? 
God: Well, as you can see from the many- 
Church: Gender neutral. Got it. 
God:  That's not what I- 
Church:  Votes are in. Gender neutral it is!
